Parishes

UPDATE: After considering the recent advice from the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference and direction from the Federal and NSW Governments, Bishop Brian has directed that the following measures will be in place until further notice, effective Saturday 21 March 2020:

  • No public Masses will be celebrated in the Diocese of Wollongong.
  • All faithful in the diocese will be dispensed from the obligation to physically attend Mass on Sundays. However, parishioners can honour their Sunday obligation by participating in a time of prayer within the home, reading the Scriptures, or watching Mass on television/online (canon 87 §1 , canon 1248 §2).
  • Mass will continue to be said privately by priests throughout the diocese on behalf of the faithful on a daily basis.
  • Churches will, as far as possible, remain open for private prayer.

Bishop Brian Mascord is celebrating Sunday Mass online (as well as Holy Week) and there are a number of parishes and communities in the diocese livestreaming daily and weekend Masses. For more information, click here.

“The parish is the presence of the Church in a given territory, an environment for hearing God’s word, for growth in the Christian life, for dialogue, proclamation, charitable outreach, worship and celebration. In all its activities the parish encourages and trains its members to be evangelisers. It is a community of communities, a sanctuary where the thirsty come to drink in the midst of their journey, and a centre of constant missionary outreach” (Pope Francis, Evangelii Gaudium, 28).

In the Diocese of Wollongong, we seek to realise Pope Francis’ vision for parish through a culture of:

  • Engaging worship and music, with relevant homilies and a vibrant sacramental life.
  • Communities of welcome, care and inclusion.
  • Ministries and leaders who empower and equip people to discover and use their gifts.
  • Charitable service of love and care for the wider community.
  • Opportunities to learn and grow in the Catholic faith.
  • Sharing faith through fostering a culture of invitation and outreach.
