Clinical Pastoral Education Course (online)

Start Date: Thursday 18 June, 2026
End Date: Thursday 23 July, 2026
Cost: $500

The Southern Tablelands Clinical Pastoral Education Centre is offering an introductory 40 Hour Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) course online via Zoom.

Clinical Pastoral Education is a form of professional development for people involved in pastoral and spiritual care, chaplaincy, parish ministry, and other caring roles. This introductory course is designed to help participants grow in their understanding of pastoral care, develop practical skills, and become more aware of their own values, attitudes and assumptions in order to care for others with greater wisdom and sensitivity.

The course would be particularly suitable for parish workers, clergy, volunteers, nurses, teachers, and others who are interested in providing more holistic spiritual and pastoral care. It may also be valuable for those discerning whether they are called to pastoral or spiritual care ministry, as well as those already serving in this area who would like to refresh and strengthen their skills.

Across the program, participants will explore areas such as:

  • spirituality and spiritual care
  • the scope of pastoral care
  • listening skills and empathy
  • self-awareness
  • grief and loss
  • multi-faith and multi-cultural awareness
  • theological reflection
  • pastoral encounter review and group supervision
  • the action-reflection model of pastoral supervision

The program includes morning reflections, teaching sessions, presentations, group work, role plays, and theological and spiritual reflection.

This course follows the guidelines of the NSW College of Clinical Pastoral Education and covers the essential capabilities required for pastoral visitors in NSW hospitals in accordance with the relevant NSW Health and Civil Chaplaincies Advisory Committee framework. It can also be undertaken as a refresher course for those wishing to update their pastoral skills. The introductory CPE course is also a pre-requisite for the 400 hour Foundational Unit CPE 1.

The course will run over six sessions, beginning on Thursday 18 June 2026 and concluding on Thursday 23 July 2026, from 9.30am to 4pm.

Session dates:
18 June, 25 June, 2 July, 9 July, 16 July and 23 July 2026
