My Sisters and Brothers in Christ

After a Spirit-filled process of dialogue and discernment, I am delighted to let you know that the Benedictine Sisters at Jamberoo Abbey have today elected a new abbess. Sr Hilda Scott OSB succeeds Mother Mary Barnes OSB as mother abbess.

Mother Hilda needs no introduction to anyone in our diocese or beyond. Her contributions to our Advent and Lenten programs, as well as her regular “Wisdom from the Abbey” segment on our The Journey Catholic Radio Show inspires thousands of people each week in their walk with God. She is also a household name to thousands of young people throughout Australia who have had the privilege to hear her speak at a number of Australian Catholic Youth Festivals.

I am delighted for Mother Hilda and for the sisters at the Abbey. It was such a privilege to preside at the election process today. The presence of the Holy Spirit in the room was moving.

I thank Mary for the faithful leadership she has given to the community over the past 12 years. Like a true servant leader, Mary has always led with others in mind, and it gives me great comfort knowing that she can now take a well-deserved rest.

I ask that you join me in praying for Mother Hilda and the community as they move forward together with their new leader, and as they continue to pray for the world—a world that needs prayers more than ever.

Yours in Christ

Bishop of Wollongong
