Requiescat in pace Fr Peter Caruana

August 5, 2021

On Tuesday 3 August 2021, Bishop Brian Mascord made the following statement:

“It is with great sadness that I write to inform you of the death of Fr Peter Caruana—retired parish priest of 36 years at Holy Family Catholic Parish, Ingleburn. Fr Peter died at 9:15am this morning in Wollongong Hospital. His condition deteriorated very quickly this morning.

Due to COVD-19 restrictions, there will be a private funeral for Fr Peter. Once details of the funeral have been finalised, we will provide any information as to online participation if this is a possibility.

Fr Peter had an unfailing commitment to Jesus Christ and his Church, and to his role as a priest, especially his love for celebrating the Mass and other sacraments. As detailed in the parish’s 50th anniversary celebration book: “When we watch him celebrate the Eucharist, there can be no doubt in our mind that a miracle has taken place as the bread and wine are transformed into the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ. If he never did anything else but that, he would have fulfilled his vocation as a priest!”

We pray for the repose of the soul of Fr Peter Caruana and offer our condolences and prays to the Caruana family, as well as Fr Peter’s friends, parishioners and priestly colleagues.

May he rest in peace.

– Bishop Brian Mascord

O God, you raised your servant Fr Peter
to the sacred priesthood of Jesus Christ,
according to the Order of Melchisedech,
giving him the sublime power to offer the Eternal Sacrifice,
to bring the Body and Blood of your Son Jesus Christ down upon the altar,
and to absolve the sins of men and women in your own Holy Name.
We beseech you to reward his faithfulness and to forget his faults,
admitting him speedily into your Holy Presence,
there to enjoy forever the recompense of his labours.
This we ask through Jesus Christ your Son, our Lord. Amen.

Requiescat in pace.
