Bushfire crisis

Fires in the diocese

December 21, 2019

My Sisters and Brothers in Christ

We are all aware of the catastrophic weather conditions across the country which have caused so much devastation and heartache, particularly in Queensland and New South Wales. I ask you especially to hold the communities of Milton/Ulladulla and Picton/Tahmoor in your prayers and thoughts as our parishioners and clergy face the threat of fires that are raging within the boundaries of our own diocese.

So many communities have been greatly impacted by serious injury, the loss of property and livestock, and they need our support – spiritually, emotionally and financially. For this reason I encourage you to support the St Vincent de Paul Society (SVdP) which has a dedicated website.  The SVDP is able to then direct funds to where they are most needed. I pray that all will be comforted and strengthened by our actions.

I ask you to pray especially for all who have suffered loss through death and injury and in particular we mourn the loss of the two young firefighters who lost their lives yesterday. We pray for the many brave women and men who continue to put themselves at risk in order to assist those who are exposed to danger.

Please make the safety of your families a priority at this time and over the days ahead.

Yours in the Lord

Most Rev Brian G Mascord
BISHOP OF WOLLONGONG
