“The new president of the NSW Law Society, Elizabeth Espinosa, has the poise and discipline of a flamenco dancer. Which she is. She has a steely-eyed determination to succeed, sparked by her migrant Spanish parents.” SMH 29.2.19

The NSW Law Society caters for 34,000 solicitors with a voluntary membership rate of around 90 per cent. Its role encompasses the licensing of lawyers, disciplinary matters, continuing education, professional standards, lobbying and policy making, spearheaded by 27 voluntary committees of lawyers. Elizabeth took up the role as its President on 1 January 2019.

The former St Mary Star of the Sea Wollongong and St John’s Dapto student is the first graduate from the University of Wollongong to hold this position and the first member of her family to practise as a lawyer. The mother of two is a strong supporter of professional integrity, the rule of law, natural justice principles, education, diversity and inclusion.

In her current and previous roles as General Counsel for two local government authorities, Elizabeth has been a crucial part of the executive team and a lead decision maker in numerous complex matters. She has often been involved in the interplay of various Commonwealth and State legislation and corporate governance and probity principles, including responding to investigations by the NSW Ombudsman and the Independent Commission Against Corruption.

Elizabeth has taken a years leave of absence from her role at Liverpool City Council where she manages and supervises three divisions – legal, governance and procurement.

Catholic Business Connections (CBC) is an opportunity for business women and men in our diocese (active and retired) who share common values, to network and engage with each other and leaders representing the diocese. CBC gathers three or four times a year for lunch and to listen to guest speakers chosen to inspire with their unique story and share how they relate their work and spiritual life experience to the context of living in a modern world.
