We are honored to welcome Carmel Shaw from Australian Catholic Religious Against Trafficking of Humans (ACRATH) to our upcoming Catholic Business Connections gathering.

In our modern world, the challenge of human trafficking and slavery—often hidden in plain sight—demands our attention. With an estimated 40,000 people experiencing slavery in Australia and billions in imported goods carrying risks of exploitation in their production, this is a profound attack on human dignity that we are called to address. As Pope Francis and Pope Leo have reminded us, these are not just global issues; they are moral imperatives that require our action and advocacy.

Carmel Shaw, a leader in Community Development at ACRATH, brings deep expertise in social justice, mission leadership, and advocacy to our stage. In this session, she will guide us through the reality of modern slavery in Australia, helping us understand where these risks exist in our own communities and supply chains.

Most importantly, this will be an uplifting conversation about hope. Carmel will share practical ways we—as people of faith and business leaders—can recognize the signs of exploitation, take collective action, and become a vital part of the solution.

Join us at our next luncheon and be inspired on how we can uphold human dignity in our professional and personal lives, turning awareness into meaningful change.

Catholic Business Connections (CBC) is an opportunity for professional and business women and men in our diocese (active and retired) who share common values, to network and engage with each other and leaders representing the diocese. CBC gathers three times a year, for two luncheons and one dinner, to listen to guest speakers chosen to inspire with their unique story and share how they relate their work and spiritual life experience to the context of living in a modern world. Members are also invited to attend Bishop Brian’s End of Year Thank You Gathering.
