A message from Bishop Brian on the Bondi tragedy

December 15, 2025

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ

Our hearts are heavy with grief and disbelief following the tragic events at Bondi Beach. Along with my brother bishops, I echo the deep sorrow felt across our nation.

Archbishop Timothy Costelloe SDB, president of the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference, spoke for us all when he said: “The violence and horror which descended upon Bondi on Sunday evening have shaken Australians to the core…. This blind prejudice and hatred points to a dark and destructive stain in our society which threatens not just our Jewish brothers and sisters but, in fact, all of us.”

I am grateful for the local pastoral presence of Archbishop Anthony Fisher OP, and join him in solidarity in his call for prayer: “Let us pray for those who have been killed or injured, the many who were forced to run for their lives and our emergency service workers who are right now trying to keep people safe. May Our Lady, Queen of Peace, intercede for all affected, and for our beloved city at this time.”

During times of tragedy such as these, we must stand together, not in fear, but in love, so that hatred does not have the final word. May Our Lady, Queen of Peace, intercede for our diocese, our country, and all those affected.

Lord, make us instruments of your peace.
