A joyful day of ordination for Deacon Darren McDowell

August 26, 2025

On a radiant Saturday morning, 23 August 2025, amid sunshine that felt like the Holy Spirit shining down upon us after weeks of rain and grey skies, the community gathered at St Francis Xavier Cathedral, Wollongong, to witness and celebrate the ordination of Darren McDowell as a transitional deacon, the final step before ordination to the priesthood later this year.

Presided over by Bishop Brian Mascord, the liturgy was filled with reverence, joy, and deep faith. From the moving words of Scripture and solemn promises made, to the laying on of hands and the vesting of the stole and dalmatic, the celebration was a powerful witness to God’s call and Darren’s generous response.

The music—led by Angela Quinn and the Diocesan Choir, alongside the Seminary Schola—was truly uplifting, enriching the beauty of the liturgy and helping the whole assembly to pray with one voice.

In a heartfelt word of thanks, Deacon Darren reflected on his journey of discernment, a journey that began in earnest in 2018 after attending a Divine Renovation conference in Canada. From that point, and through many encounters with God’s love, he felt the call to leave behind the familiar and respond with faith and courage. His story is one of surrender, transformation, and trust in the work of the Holy Spirit.

We give thanks for Deacon Darren’s “yes” to God and his desire to serve God’s people in humility and love. As he continues preparing for priestly ordination, we keep him in our prayers and support him as a brother in faith, and pray for the community at St John the Evangelist Campbelltown where Deacon Darren is currently placed.

We hope you enjoy this selection of photos capturing the grace and joy of the day.
