Carmelite Feast Day Celebrations

Date: Thursday 16 July, 2026
St. Albert of Jerusalem presents the Rule to the hermits on Mount Carmel

This week holds special significance for Carmelites around the world, with the Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel celebrated on Thursday 16 July and the Feast of the Prophet Elijah on Monday 20 July.

The Carmelites began as a group of pilgrims living on Mount Carmel during the time of the Crusades. Today, Carmelite friars, nuns and lay people continue to live out the Carmelite charism through the Order of Carmelites and the Discalced Carmelite Order throughout the world.

You do not need to be a priest or religious sister to become part of the Carmelite family. Lay Carmelites seek to follow Christ through prayer, community and service while living within their families, workplaces and local communities.

What can the Carmelite charism offer our lives in 2026? Those interested in learning more about Carmelite spirituality or the Illawarra Lay Carmelites are warmly invited to make contact.
