Professional Standards and Safeguarding

The Office of Professional Standards and Safeguarding (OPSS) is part of the Office of the Bishop and is tasked primarily with the development and maintenance of a safe institutional culture for both children and adults in the diocese, across all pastoral works, ministries, services and activities. In being bearers of Christ’s Love, the work of OPSS fosters ongoing development and growth as a diocesan/faith community, supporting the bishop in his mandate received from Christ to teach, sanctify and govern.

The OPSS assesses the practical and consistent application of the Child Safe Standards across the diocese by implementing thorough and accessible risk assessment processes and hazard management strategies, alongside providing safeguarding training and professional development courses.

OPSS acknowledges and is committed to providing ongoing support and opportunities for healing to victims and survivors of abuse within the diocese.

Every person has the right to be informed, heard, respected, empowered and to feel safe.

As a diocese, and as individuals, we have a zero-tolerance approach to abuse, and we commit to being safe people in the lives of all persons in the diocese, in particular children, young people and vulnerable persons, and to work together with them to create cultures that honour dignity, enrich wellbeing, and keep them safe.
