CBC March 2022 Luncheon

Date: Thursday 17 March, 2022
Time: 11:45am–2pm
Venue: Rydges Campbelltown
Speaker: Bishop Daniel Meagher
Topic: "Homelessness and the common good."
Dress: Professional attire (with a touch of green!)
RSVP: Thursday 10 March 2022

Bishop Daniel Meagher has been a vocal advocate for the homeless. In 2021, he spent six months working with the homeless and the marginalised in inner Sydney, where he said Mass weekly at the Matthew Talbot Hostel and also volunteered to help the homeless at David’s Place and through the homeless support services provided by the Order of Malta.

“I spent a lot of time ministering to the homeless, living at Surry Hills and travelling down to parks around Central where they congregated. I also got to know a lot of people living in the housing commission areas. I am attracted to that because I find that by being close to people on the margins, I come much closer to God. I hope to continue that as Bishop”.

Bishop Daniel Meagher will be speaking on “Homelessness and the common good.”

When Bishop Daniel Meagher completed his secondary schooling in 1979, he studied economics and law at the University of Sydney. It was during these years that he felt a strong calling to serve the marginalised, volunteering at the Matthew Talbot Hostel for homeless men and also at the local St Vincent De Paul conference at St Canice’s parish in the inner Sydney suburb of Elizabeth Bay.

He practised as a solicitor for three years with Mallesons Stephen Jaques before embarking upon his studies for the priesthood at St Patrick’s Seminary. Since being ordained a priest in 1995, he has made a substantial contribution to the Archdiocese of Sydney including as a former Rector of the Good Shepherd Seminary from 2015-2020 and as a Director of Catechesis for World Youth Day when Sydney hosted the event in 2008.

Bishop Daniel has served in numerous leadership positions, including as Director of Mission for Catholic Care, as a Parish Priest in Carnes Hill from 2000-2004 and as an Administrator of Sacred Heart Cathedral in Broken Hill from 2012-2014, and at All Hallows in Five Dock in 2021.

On 18 November 2021, Pope Francis appointed him as Titular Bishop of Pocofelto and an auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Sydney.

Catholic Business Connections (CBC) is an opportunity for business women and men in our diocese (active and retired) who share common values, to network and engage with each other and leaders representing the diocese. CBC gathers four times a year for lunch and to listen to guest speakers chosen to inspire with their unique story and share how they relate their work and spiritual life experience to the context of living in a modern world.
