Appin Massacre Memorial Ceremony 2026

Date: Sunday 19 April, 2026
Time: 11:00am–3.30pm
Venue: Cataract Dam Picnic Ground

This year marks 210 years since the Appin Massacre of 17 April 1816, a significant and painful moment in the history of the Dharawal people.

The annual memorial ceremony will be held on Sunday 19 April 2026, from 11am to 3.30pm at the Cataract Dam Picnic Area . All are invited to attend in a spirit of remembrance, respect, and solidarity with the Dharawal people who lost their lives, and with the descendants of those who survived.

This gathering is an opportunity to pause, to acknowledge the truth of what took place, and to continue the shared work of healing and reconciliation.

The day is family-friendly and begins with a free BBQ lunch. From the picnic area, there is a short walk down to the dam wall where the ceremony takes place. For those who need assistance, transport will be available.

The memorial includes:

  • A smoking ceremony
  • Cultural dance by local Aboriginal groups
  • Didgeridoo performance

You may wish to bring a hat, sunscreen, water, and comfortable walking shoes. If you have specific dietary needs, bringing your own picnic is recommended.

Hosted by the Winga Myamly Reconciliation Group and the Aboriginal communities of Macarthur, the day is centred on three enduring themes:

Remembering. Healing. Reconciliation.

All are welcome to attend and take part respectfully in this important day.
