Bishop Peter Ingham's Easter Greetings 2016

All over the world at Easter, Christians celebrate Jesus being raised from the dead.  The evidence of Jesus’ death on the Cross is quite conclusive.

So Easter does not celebrate the resuscitation of Jesus, but his resurrection.

In whatever way they came to experience the Risen Lord Jesus, the disciples knew that this was Jesus who actually died on Calvary and was buried and that their personal encounter was with the one who was crucified.

In a recent movie called “Risen” the actor Ralph Fiennes said he wanted to approach Christ’s resurrection from the viewpoint of an unbeliever.  Fiennes plays the part of Pontius Pilate’s executioner who oversaw the Crucifixion and death of Jesus Christ, the sealing of the tomb and the subsequent search for the body of Christ once the tomb was discovered empty, despite it being guarded.

In the end, Pilate’s lieutenant discovered the Risen Jesus with his disciples and he witnessed Jesus showing his wounds to doubting Thomas.

The former centurion leaves Pilate’s service and becomes a follower of Jesus.

St Paul said, “If Jesus didn’t rise from the dead, then our faith is in vain and we are still in our sins.” (1 Cor 15:17)

Have a blessed Easter Season
